Learning Curve 1 - Brightness
Download FTS images for this lesson here.
Inquiry Claim example: There are lots more objects in the sky than we can readily see.

These images 1, 10, and 100 second exposures, were taken in the Perseus Galaxy Cluster field.

All images taken at PMO, summer 2000, Piggy Camera, Field Of View (FOV) approx 1 degree.

Try modifying contrast, brightness, and scaling to show

1. What do we need to do with our camera in order to view more objects?

2. Why are these objects so difficult to detect?

3. What factors limit our ability to detect STARS? GALAXIES?

4. How do we know when we’ve seen everything there is to see in a sector of sky?
